The 2017 Coffee Championships Are Here!
Happy New Year coffee lovers! I hope 2017 has been filled with joy, opportunity and caffeine for all of you.
So far this year all we can think about is the 2017 United States Barista Competition! Our very own Maggie Snow will be representing Chattahoochee in the esteemed event.
Last year, we talked a lot about the competition, and this year it is no different. The stakes are high, the drinks are hot, and Maggie is ready to steam the competition.
The USBC will consist of two qualifying events (Coffee Champs); one held in Austin, Texas, and one held in Knoxville, Tenn. There will be a total of 60 baristas in each competition but only 36 will move on to compete in the USBC in Seattle. There have been a few changes to this year’s qualifying rounds. The big change is no more milk course -- just an espresso course and a signature beverage course. Also there will be four judges instead of two. These changes put emphasis the coffee itself, and the creativity and customer service of the competitor.
All baristas have their eyes on the prize and hope to travel to Seattle for the national competition on April 21-23.
Aside from bragging rights and resume points, most baristas compete for the love of the products and process. Being named the best in your city, state, region and country isn’t so bad either.
Obviously, the better you do -- the further you get. And the winner of the USBC in April has the opportunity to represent the United States in the World Barista Competition in Seoul, South Korea in November of 2017.
The first Coffee Champs Event will be held in Knoxville on January 21-22. And like I said, the beloved Chattahoochee manager, Maggie Snow, will be there to represent us and show her skills! You can watch the competition here or follow the live tweeting here.
If you have the time, come by on Saturday and watch on the big screen at Chattahoochee Westside -- we can cheer on Maggie together!
